About us

White Lotus Fashions is a clothing and accessories maker.  All of our products are made in India.  We custom design our fabric and get it made by weaver communities across India.  Cutting and sewing is done in our own facility in Hyderabad, India

Our garments are made for Boutiques.  We do not sell on Amazon or any other market place.

Our Fabrics

Our clothing is designed for daily use.  Our focus is on the “feel” of the fabric and the comfort, rather than the fashion of the day.   We promote fabrics that are dyed or printed with natural, plant based colors that are not harmful to the skin or the planet.

We love our cotton.  Not just because it is breathable, and biodegradable, but also for its great feel on your skin.  Moreover, cotton is very friendly with natural and plant based colors.

Hand Block Printed using Natural Dyes:

Kalamkari and Ajrakh are some of the  traditional  arts of fabric printing cotton fabric using Vegetable dyes and wooden blocks. Intricate designs are etched into wood blocks as per a given design by master block makers.  Each color requires a separate block

Natural dyes are derived from  indigo, henna, turmeric, pomegranate, jaggery, iron etc   Dyes are made by extracting colors from roots, leaves, flowers, nuts and  mineral salts of iron, tin and copper.

The fabric is prepared for printing by soaking in Myrobalan juice. The block is dipped into the dye and the print is stamped onto the fabric by hand, one block at a time.  After printing a single color the fabric is boiled in special leaves and sun dried to resume further printing.

Complex designs require the use of two or more overlapping prints.  The fabric is treated between prints for color setting.  The treatment of the fabric and the number of stages involved vary for each color.  This includes washing and boiling the fabric with  various plant based derivatives mixed  in water.

Finally the fabric is washed in shallow river waters to wash off the extra color and to set the final color shade.  The depth and the speed of the water determine the brightness of the colors.  The fabric is finally ready to be crafted into White Lotus bags, clothing, scarves and bandanas.

This art form of printing fabric is eco friendly, sustainable.  It generates employment to thousands of artisans who strive to protect this unique UNICEF protected form of art.

Slight imperfections in the print are an inherent part of hand block printing.  They provide the distinguishing handcrafted appearance that separates it from the mass produced factory perfect look.  Hand wash separately in cold water.  If indigo is the dominant color, we recommend washing once  before wear.

IKAT Woven

IKAT is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs resist dyeing on the yarns prior to weaving the fabric. The resist is formed by binding individual yarns or bundles of yarns with a tight wrapping applied in the desired pattern. The yarns are then dyed.

The bindings may then be altered to create a new pattern and the yarns dyed again with another color. This process may be repeated multiple times to produce elaborate, multicolored patterns. When the dyeing is finished all the bindings are removed and the yarns are woven into cloth. Unlike other resist-dyeing techniques such as tie-dye and batik, the resist is applied to the yarns before they are woven into cloth. Because the surface design is created in the yarns rather than on the finished cloth, in ikat both fabric faces (front and back) are patterned.

The lack of precision is proof of its authenticity of hand-weaving process, as opposed to machine-made.
